Abstract:

Serum selenium levels were measured in 80 patients with chronic catarrhal colitis (CCC) and irritated bowel syndrome (IBS). 78% of patients examined showed selenium insufficiency, that was relatively less pronounced in IBS compared to CCC, in well nourished persons as well as in people not upwards 60 years old. Reception of a selenium enriched food supplement based on spirulina led to about twofold diminishment of patient's number with selenium insufficiency.
