As far back as the 5th century BC the Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about the use of a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that reduced fevers and eased aches and pains. Native Americans also used an infusion of willow bark for similar purposes. What was this remarkable "healing" principle within the bark that relieved dis-ease?
Olive oil has been a mainstay of the Mediterranean diet for thousands of years and is well known as a heart healthy fat. One study suggests that consuming olive oil may also help prevent strokes in older people.
Apples of course have a reputation for keeping the doctor away and now science finds that both apples and pears may keep strokes away. In the first study of the color of produce, Dutch researchers found that the white flesh of fruits and vegetables may protect against stroke. Other colors, not so much.
