Consumer Health Advocacy: Product Analysis
Talk about Vertical Integration! Coppertone is an American brand name sunscreen company owned by Merck, a corporation who makes unimaginably high profits selling drugs, i.e. "fine chemicals" which are used to treat diseases that are largely a result of chemical poisoning.
The irony here is that sunscreen is often sold to the consumer with the promise of protection from skin cancer and yet, many of the ingredients contained within these largely petrochemically derived products are known carcinogens, capable of both directly damaging the skin and going into systemic circulation for more serious unintended consequences on our health.
Moreoever, because ultraviolet light contributes to the production of vitamin D in the skin, it is possible that sunscreen increases cancer risk by further depleting the body of this invaluable anti-cancer vitamin/hormone.
The ingredients below tell a terrible story of children exposed to a battery of potentially (and actually!) harmful chemicals by unwitting parents who falsely think they are protecting them skin cancer.
