Abstract: It is estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) that most of the world's population depends on herbal medicine for their health care.also known as black-caraway and as"Kalonji,"is a well-known seed all over the world. It is one of the most common medicinal plants worldwide and contains many useful chemical constituents that we can find in its fixed oil, such as thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, dithymoquinone, thymol, nigellicine, carvacrol, nigellimine, nigellicine, nigellidine, and alpha-hederin. Due to these numerous important ingredients it was found that it affects different areas of our body and has many pharmacological effects as antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing effect and also for acne vulgaris, skin cancer, pigmentation, and many cosmeceutical applications. Based on the folklore usage ofseeds and oil, they are used in various systems of food and medicines. The aim of this article is to provide a detailed survey of the literature of cosmeceutical and external applications ofwhich is expected to stimulate further studies on this subject.
https://greenmedinfo.com/article/nigella-sativa-exerts-antibacterial-antiviral-anti-inflammatory-and-wound-heal#comments Nigella sativa (aka Black Seed) Anti-cancer Anti-Inflammatory Agents Antibacterial Effects Antiviral Agents Wound Healing Effects Review Wed, 22 Apr 2020 01:05:44 +0000 greenmedinfo 219026 at https://greenmedinfo.com The mechanistic activity of Chinese skullcap may make it a useful herb for treating periodontal disease. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/mechanistic-activity-chinese-skullcap-may-make-it-useful-herb-treating-periodo PMID: Complement Ther Med. 2018 Jun ;38:11-18. Epub 2018 Mar 26. PMID: 29857875 Abstract Title: Protective role of flavonoid baicalin from Scutellaria baicalensis in periodontal disease pathogenesis: A literature review. Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease is characterized by a chronic infection, leading to the irreversible destruction of tissues supporting the teeth. Bacteria, pro-inflammatory mediators and host immune response play important role in the progress of periodontal disease. Baicalin is a bioactive flavone extracted from the dry raw root of Scutellaria baicalensis, with pharmaceutical actions of anti-inflammation, anti-oxidants, anti-tumor, antivirus, and so on. The present review summarizes the efficacy of baicalin in periodontal treatment.METHODS: A computer-based literature search was carried out using Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science to identify papers published until 2017. Keywords used in the search were"baicalin"/"baicalein"and various words related to periodontal disease (periodontal, periodontitis, periodontal tissue, gingival, gingivitis, gingival tissue, periodontal disease, gingival disease, gingiva, periodontium).RESULTS: A total of 28 original studies were found, including 3 bacteriological studies, 7 zoological studies and 18 cytological studies. 15 of them were published in English and 13 of them were published in Chinese. Results from these 28 studies could not be pooled to conduct meta-analysis due to the heterogeneity. The pharmacological properties and mechanisms of baicalin for treating periodontal disease is mainly focused on five aspects: antibacterial effect on putative periodontopathic bacteria, protective effect on periodontal tissues, regulatory effect on pro-inflammatory mediators and matrix metalloproteinases, and regulatory effect on innate immune response.CONCLUSIONS: Baicalin have been shown to possess multiple pharmacological activities in periodontal tissues. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully defined. Further researches are needed to provide more scientific evidence for the clinical periodontal treatment.
https://greenmedinfo.com/article/mechanistic-activity-chinese-skullcap-may-make-it-useful-herb-treating-periodo#comments Chinese Skullcap Periodontal Diseases Anti-Inflammatory Agents Antibacterial Effects Plant Extracts Review Fri, 03 Apr 2020 22:52:46 +0000 greenmedinfo 217931 at https://greenmedinfo.com This review seeks to find ways to implement the antibacterial properties of essential oils as agents of food preservation in an attempt to replace harmful preservatives. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/review-seeks-find-ways-implement-antibacterial-properties-essential-oils-agent PMID: Front Microbiol. 2012 ;3:12. Epub 2012 Jan 25. PMID: 22291693 Abstract Title: Essential oils in food preservation: mode of action, synergies, and interactions with food matrix components. Abstract: Essential oils are aromatic and volatile liquids extracted from plants. The chemicals in essential oils are secondary metabolites, which play an important role in plant defense as they often possess antimicrobial properties. The interest in essential oils and their application in food preservation has been amplified in recent years by an increasingly negative consumer perception of synthetic preservatives. Furthermore, food-borne diseases are a growing public health problem worldwide, calling for more effective preservation strategies. The antibacterial properties of essential oils and their constituents have been documented extensively. Pioneering work has also elucidated the mode of action of a few essential oil constituents, but detailed knowledge about most of the compounds' mode of action is still lacking. This knowledge is particularly important to predict their effect on different microorganisms, how they interact with food matrix components, and how they work in combination with other antimicrobial compounds. The main obstacle for using essential oil constituents as food preservatives is that they are most often not potent enough as single components, and they cause negative organoleptic effects when added in sufficient amounts to provide an antimicrobial effect. Exploiting synergies between several compounds has been suggested as a solution to this problem. However, little is known about which interactions lead to synergistic, additive, or antagonistic effects. Such knowledge could contribute to design of new and more potent antimicrobial blends, and to understand the interplay between the constituents of crude essential oils. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of current knowledge about the antibacterial properties and antibacterial mode of action of essential oils and their constituents, and to identify research avenues that can facilitate implementation of essential oils as natural preservatives in foods. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/review-seeks-find-ways-implement-antibacterial-properties-essential-oils-agent#comments Essential Oils: Unspecified Foodborne Pathogens: Prevention/Food Preservation Antibacterial Effects Food Preservatives Food Preservation Synergies Review Fri, 13 Apr 2012 23:23:08 +0000 greenmedinfo 74263 at https://greenmedinfo.com [Effect of turmeric volatile oil on the respiratory tract]. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/effect-turmeric-volatile-oil-respiratory-tract PMID: Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi. 1998 Oct ;23(10):624-5, inside back cover.
